Whatever you do, don’t get your hair cut in a backstreet hairdressers.
However, cheap it is (£2), however nice the hairdresser (very) and however desperate you are to sort out your straggly locks (extremely), DO NOT DO IT!
I did and am very much regretting it.
(Think mullet/ bowl hybrid only worse. With a very short fringe.)
Tomorrow I’m off to buy some heavy-duty headbands that will hopefully cover the worst until it’s grown back. And given how short the front is, that will probably be sometime next summer.

I can really relate to your experience. I have very short hair, but even with that some of these people have been know to cock up using the bloody cutters.
But, look on the bright side a) it will grow back and b) if anyone says wtf happened to your melon you say “well when I was travelling in North Africa dont you know….”
